CAPITALISTS AND ATHLETES

I visited the World Track & Field Championships last month. Americans adore their football and basketball, but track and field and Olympic sports hold a unique place in my heart. These sports are carnivals of excitement, inspiration, and positive national pride at the world championship level. Individual and team skill, ambition, diligence, focus, and (eventually) a healthy dose of ego are on display. These human qualities are what make excellence possible.

Have you ever wondered why free markets are more effective than other options? One solution is to look to sports like track and field. Sports that they are most equipped for allow athletes to specialise. That's a fantastic development. Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia, who weighs 59 kilos, set a record by winning the men's 26.2-mile marathon in a time of 2 hours, 5 minutes, and 36 seconds. It's interesting to note that Ryan Crouser's gold medal in the shot put weights the same as Tola's first-place medal in the marathon. The large American is 145 kilogrammes in weight or 2.5 Tamirat Tolas.

We are inspired by track and Olympic sports because they showcase a diverse range of human abilities and body kinds. While sprinters are sleek and muscular and designed for quick bursts, high jumpers are tall and thin. Hurdling is as supple as ballet dancing. Swimmers have lengthy torsos and broad shoulders. Rarely do female gymnasts stand higher than 1.5 metres? Pole vaulters and downhill skiers both handle potentially fatal situations with the same calmness as astronauts. Swimmers, bikers, and long-distance runners are stoics.

How does capitalism function? Let's turn to The Wealth of Nations, the key work by Adam Smith, rather than athletics. Smith observed that when people are free to use their talents in the marketplace and exchange their labour for that of others, communities flourish. Thus, a skilled bootmaker may concentrate on producing the best footwear possible without worrying about creating the glass for the windows of his store, which is the responsibility of a glassmaker. One plus one is greater than two in a free market.
