EXPORT RESTRICTIONS ON U.S. CHIPS & GAS TURBINES

 

On Friday, the United States passed new regulations that place restrictions on the export of technologies that are essential to the creation of advanced semiconductors and gas turbine engines. The United States of America asserts that the use of these technologies is critical to the maintenance of the nation's national security.

"Electronics that utilise these materials have significantly expanded military potential," as stated by the Department of Commerce. As a result of this, gallium oxide and diamond are considered to be examples of what is known as "emerging and foundational technologies," which are the subject of the move. Alan Estevez, the Undersecretary of Commerce for Industry and Security, stated that "technological advancements that allow technologies like semiconductors and engines to operate faster, more efficiently, longer, and in more severe conditions can be game changers in both the commercial and military context." "We are able to guarantee that our mutually agreed-upon security goals are realised when we acknowledge the dangers as well as the rewards involved, and when we work in concert with our international partners." The deliberations that took place in December 2021 resulted in 42 of the participating countries reaching a consensus on how to regulate a variety of different items, including the four technologies.

The export regulations that are in place in the United States cover a greater variety of equipment, software, and technologies that are utilised in the manufacturing of semiconductors. The international agreement does not cover as many technologies as the export regulations that are in place in the United States.
