LAUNCHING A TEXTILE RESEARCH CENTRE IS NTU SINGAPORE AND RGE

The RGE-NTU Sustainable Textile Research Center has been established by Royal Golden Eagle (RGE) and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore).

Ms Grace Fu, the Minister for Sustainability and the Environment of Singapore, gave the research centre its official opening.

The RGE-NTU SusTex project seeks to hasten innovation in textile recycling and transform research findings into workable solutions that may be implemented in densely populated areas like Singapore.

The $6 million joint research centre's researchers will study topics like recycling textile waste into fibre and developing the next generation of environmentally friendly and sustainable textiles. The objective is to analyse the chemistry of various textile components and identify the best procedures and methods needed to launch a circular textile economy.

The centre's mission is in line with Singapore's zero waste aim to create a sustainable, resource-efficient, and climate-resilient country, according to NTU President Professor Subra Suresh.

The relationship between NTU and RGE "leverages NTU's intellectual assets in materials and environmental chemistry and draws on RGE's industry experience as a worldwide resources-based manufacturing organisation," Suresh said.

Perry Lim, executive director of RGE, stated: "We want to contribute where we can make the biggest difference. The import of garbage, particularly textile waste, is being prohibited by more nations.

However, metropolitan areas like Singapore cannot use the present textile recycling methods since they rely on a bleaching and separation process that uses powerful chemicals.

"RGE can assist in this by sharing our global R&D knowledge as the world's largest producer of viscose and by providing S$6 million in cash to establish the research centre and fund its work. We can also possibly scale up the feasible technologies and solutions across our global operations."

The scientists at the NTU School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering and the School of Materials Science and Engineering will contribute their knowledge to the collaborative research centre.
