SCIENTISTS CAUTION AGAINST DRINKING RAINWATER

 

The amount of "forever chemicals" in rainwater exceeds the strictest guidelines established by environmental and health organisations. The study's authors, who began work on it in 2010, claim that they only examined four of the thousands of fluorine-based compounds and issue a warning that the long-term effects of exposure are still unclear.

Microplastics are impossible to avoid. From the centre of the Amazon forest to the ocean's depths, they can be found everywhere. Most regions where people live have significant air pollution, and more negative impacts are continually being found. Researchers have even discovered that due to soil pollution, eggs from hens raised outdoors in Australia have 40 times the amount of lead in them as commercially produced eggs.

Researchers from ETH Zürich and Stockholm University conducted a study to learn more about the PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl compounds, family of contaminants. Artificial fluorine-based compounds are also known as persistent or eternal chemicals because of how slowly they decay.

The researchers found that PFAS are present in rainwater almost everywhere on earth in concentrations that render it dangerous to consume. They referred to the strictest regulations, which were created by US and EU health and environmental organisations.

Only four of the 4,500 known permanent compounds, or perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs), were the subject of the 2010 study. PFAS are typically heat- and stain-resistant, water- and oil-repellent materials.

They became well-liked by manufacturers of a variety of goods, including nonstick cookware, firefighting foam, clothing, and adhesives.

Several studies have suggested that PFAS may be linked to problems with fertility, obesity, cancer, diabetes, and developmental impairments, although the evidence is still ambiguous. Particularly, the US has drastically reduced the permitted amounts on concerns that the chemicals may be impairing children's ability to respond to vaccines.
