50,000 PEOPLE SIGN A PETITION TO BAN CRUISES AND CONTROL POLLUTING SHIPS IN MARSEILLE

An online petition to keep polluting cruise ships out of Marseille has received more than 50,000 signatures.
The cruise port in the French city, which receives about 2 million visitors annually, is one of the busiest in all of Europe.
But as air pollution grows, many locals have had enough.
Mayor Benoît Payan started a petition in July to forbid the dirtiest ships from docking.
Last month, he wrote on Twitter, "The Mediterranean is slowly dying, yet the enormous cruise ship lobbyists want to keep trashing it."
"Whether they like it or not, we will keep fighting in Marseille."
The petition, which has more than 52,000 signatures, claims that the Mediterranean is not now "suffocating."
In Marseille, 10% of air pollution is attributed to shipping.
Emissions from cruise ships in the city were more than those from cars, according to a 2018 research by the air quality monitoring organization Atmosud.
A ship stopped in Marseille for an hour is equivalent to 30,000 cars traveling there at 30 km/h for the same amount of time, claims Damien Piga, manager of Atmosud.Depending on the weather, pollution has varying effects.
"According to Piga, "for marine pollution, we mostly observe a plume effect, which is an influence that moves and is determined by the wind direction.
We'll have very high quantities while we're in this pollution plume, she said.
Particulate matter, nitrogen oxide, and sulphur dioxide toxins can have harmful effects on human health.
Living close to the port for many years, Michèle Rauzier has first-hand experience with the effects of pollution.
