A NEXT TEST FOR RUSSIA IS KHERSON, AS UKRAINE LAUNCHES A MAJOR COUNTEROFFENSIVE

One of the first big tests of Kyiv's capacity to gain an advantage in the developing stalemate as Moscow's own military weaknesses mount, Ukraine looks to have launched a significant new attack against Russian-occupied territory surrounding Kherson, a strategically important city close to Crimea.
Long-range artillery strikes with precision satellite-guided rocket systems from the United States were used to attack Russian strongholds as well as positions and formations of pro-Russian troops at the front, signaling a change in Ukraine's recent strategy as the offensive to retake Kherson, the regional capital. Reports that some of those forces were leaving their positions and fleeing quickly started to surface late on Monday local time.
The offensive, which observers had projected in recent days after increased bombardment of Russian military installations there, notably Sunday evening, was confirmed by several officials in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's administration.
The first line of defense of Russia had been breached by Ukrainian forces near Kherson, according to a message posted on one of the ministry's social media channels.
In light of the Ukrainian army's highly effective employment of Western armaments, the ministry stated that "they believe that Ukraine has a real opportunity to retake its occupied territory."
