CHINA RESTRICTS 65 MILLION AS THE CHRISTMAS TRAVEL PEAK APPROACHES

 

China has placed severe COVID-19 travel restrictions on 65 million of its residents and discourages domestic travel during approaching national holidays.

In the eastern port city of Tianjin, classes have been moved online after 14 new cases were reported, with all but two showing no symptoms.

The National Health Commission announced that China's population of 1.4 billion reported 1,552 new cases on Monday.

Authorities have adhered to a "zero-COVID" policy requiring lockdowns, quarantines, and the confinement of individuals suspected of having close contact with any confirmed case despite the relatively low number of infections.

China's mid-autumn festival occurs on September 10-12 and is the country's second-most important holiday after the Lunar New Year. The anti-virus measures have had a significant impact on the economy, travel, and society as a whole, but China's ruling Communist Party believes they are vital to prevent a further spread of the virus, which was first found in late 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.

Fear of being placed in a lockdown or quarantine centre for mere proximity to a positive-testing individual has significantly restricted people's work, social, and travel activities.

In Chengdu, the start of the new school year has been postponed, and the majority of inhabitants have been confined to their homes. According to allegations from state-run media, 33 cities restrict citizens to their houses or compounds.

Since the beginning of the outbreak, China has imposed merciless lockdowns on tens of millions of people, prohibiting them from receiving food, medical care, and other necessities.

Shanghai, the largest metropolis in China and a major financial centre, was closed for more than five weeks, which destabilized the local economy, sparked protests, and prompted the departure of foreign residents.
