DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF KOREA INTRODUCES A SPECIAL COUNSEL BILL WITH THE SLOGAN "INVESTIGATE FIRST LADY"

 

While its leader, Rep. Lee Jae-myung, increasingly runs the prospect of being charged with a crime, the Democratic Party of Korea is seeking a special prosecutor to look into first lady Kim Keon-hee.

Rep. Park Hong-keun, the party's floor leader, stated on Wednesday that the group would put forth a bill to name a special prosecutor to head the investigation into the first lady's criminal allegations, the two most high-profile of which are her alleged involvement in the Deutsch Motors stock price manipulation scandal and her alleged use of forged credentials to obtain teaching positions at universities.

The way the inquiry was going, according to Park, called for the appointment of a "impartial special counsel" to take charge. He also accused police and prosecutors of "giving the first lady Kim slack" and "just dragging the probe out."

He said that the party would work to have a parliamentary investigation of the first lady's potential ethical transgressions, specifically the hiring of close friends at the presidential office, independent of law enforcement.

The Democratic Party also reported President Yoon Suk-yeol to the police for the second time in a matter of days on Wednesday.

The party claimed that it has requested that Yoon be looked into for the jewelry that the first lady wore at the NATO meeting in June. Despite their high price tag, the party claimed that the necklace and bracelet she was seen wearing in photos from the trip were not included in the couple's disclosed assets.

The party claimed in a statement on Wednesday that the presidential office's explanation that the items were borrowed made the situation "much more difficult." It stated that "an investigation appears warranted to determine who or where they had been borrowed from and whether any favors were exchanged in return."
