DUE TO A LAST-MINUTE SALARY AGREEMENT, A TWO-DAY BOYCOTT ON BOARD LUFTHANSA WAS AVOIDED

Lufthansa pilots vowed to go on strike once more this Wednesday and Thursday over salary earlier today.

However, a last-minute wage agreement has prevented the two-day strike.

The largest airline in Germany would have seen its second strike in a week if the walkout had taken place. A walkout by pilots on Friday resulted in the cancellation of hundreds of flights.

In order to pressure Lufthansa to make a "real" offer in pay rise negotiations, the Vereinigung Cockpit union had previously announced intentions for a walkout on Wednesday and Thursday.

The strike has been called off as a result of Tuesday's hurried wage negotiations, according to the union, in which the two parties reached a preliminary understanding on "an extensive package of monetary and structural issues." The deal's specifics will be worked out in the upcoming days.

The Vereinigung Cockpit union had been requesting a 5.5 percent raise for its members this year and an 8.2 percent boost in step with inflation in 2023, however it is now unclear what the deal entails. Additionally, a new wage and holiday structure is wanted by pilots.

The airline estimated that these changes would result in a 40% increase in staffing expenses, or an additional €900 million over a two-year period. Prior to this, the union rejected a one-time raise from Lufthansa of €900, which amounted to a 5% increase for experienced pilots and an 18% increase for those just entering the field.

In Germany, strong unions have historically ensured that workers had favourable working conditions, utilizing strikes to advance their claims in labour disputes.
