FARMERS ARE URGING IMMIGRATION REFORM IN ORDER TO ADDRESS LABOUR SHORTAGES AND RISING FOOD COSTS

As rising production costs continue to roil the agriculture sector, farmers from across the country are uniting in support of sweeping immigration reform, which they claim may ease labour shortages and reduce food prices.
The Farm Workforce Modernization Act, which has already been approved by the House and is currently before the Senate, will, according to the farm owners, give them a steady and dependable workforce by, among other things, giving seasonal farmworkers a path to citizenship and reforming the system for issuing temporary farmworker visas.
Although not new, the current labour scarcity has been made worse by the epidemic, which has led to higher pricing or bare store shelves for customers. According to the U.S., food prices are currently 10% higher than they were at this time last year. Labour Statistics Bureau.
Rep. Zoe Lofgren, a Democrat from California who sponsored the House bill, said, "At a time when labour shortages are causing inflation and high food prices, it's clear that we need the Senate to pass our Farm Workforce Modernization Act to stabilize the agricultural workforce and protect America's food supply."
The bill, according to some worker advocacy groups, excludes some immigrants and would worsen the already existing power disparities between migrant workers and farm owners.
The widely used H-2A temporary work visa program would be changed and made even more open under the legislation's Senate version, which is sponsored by Democrats Michael Benne and Mike Crapo of Idaho and Republicans from both parties. This would grant undocumented farmworkers year-round work-based residency with a potential path to citizenship.
Bennet did not respond to NBC News' request for a comment, while Crapo declined to do so.
