In her opening press conference on Friday in Seoul, Elizabeth Salmon, the recently appointed Special Rapporteur of the United Nations on the situation of human rights in North Korea, pledged to utilize her authority to better defend the rights of women and girls in that country.

According to the Salmon, who took up the position on August 1, stated, that "He is particularly motivated to pay closer attention to the experiences of women and girls, to deepen awareness of their specialized needs, and to better respect the obstacles they suffer in the DPRK.

Although Salmon's forebears had mentioned the plight of North Korean women and girls, she thought the mandate should be revised to reflect the current state of the gender issue.
