In her opening press conference on Friday in Seoul, Elizabeth Salmon, the recently appointed Special Rapporteur of the United Nations on the situation of human rights in North Korea, pledged to utilize her authority to better defend the rights of women and girls in that country.

Although Salmon's forebears had mentioned the plight of North Korean women and girls, she thought the mandate should be revised to reflect the current state of the gender issue.

He stated that he will try to find out ways to connect with the DPRK government through relevant concerns like women's and girls' rights."

The UN expert urged China to avoid forcibly sending fugitives back to North Korea.
