FOR THEIR INVOLVEMENT IN THE 2016 BASTILLE DAY INCIDENT, EIGHT PERSONS WILL GO ON TRIAL

Eight defendants will stand before the special court of Paris on Monday, six years after the Nice incident, for a brand-new extraordinary terrorist trial that will run for more than three months.
More than 450 people were hurt in this attack on the Promenade des Anglais on the evening of Bastille Day, the French National Day, leaving 86 people dead, including 15 children and teenagers.
After the attacks of November 13th, 2015, this is the second-deadliest attack to occur on French soil.
At a symbolic move, the trial will be held in the capital's historic courthouse in "V13," a specially designed courtroom created for the 13 November trial.
865 individuals registered as civil parties in the trial as of the end of August, and more may do so at the hearing. The trial will be shown in Nice at the Acropolis conference center for those who cannot travel to Paris.
Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, a 31-year-old Tunisian who carried out the assault in 2016, was shot there and then.
He struck the crowd gathered to watch the fireworks and performances held that evening on the renowned avenue in Nice on July 14 while operating a 19-ton lorry. Police shot and killed him there.
The so-called Islamic State organization has claimed responsibility for the attack, which occurred a year and a half after the Charlie Hebdo incident and eight months after that of 13 November.
The inquiry failed to uncover a direct connection between the culprit and the jihadist group, leading to the conclusion that the accusation was "purely opportunistic."
