GERMANY: POLICE AND DEMONSTRATORS’ BRAWL OUTSIDE AN ARMAMENTS PLANT

 

Early on Friday morning, anti-war protesters attempted to block the entrance to an armaments manufacturing in the German city of Kassel. Police responded by using pepper spray and batons against them.

According to the police, the demonstrators started hurling things at them. There was at least one arrest.

In an effort to halt the production and distribution of weapons, especially those used in the war in Ukraine, activists for the "Disarm Rheinmetall" movement have called for demonstrations across the nation.

The protesters wanted to prevent the Krauss-Maffei Wegmann factory, a rival of Rheinmetall, from being entered by the morning shift. Later, the group asserted that they had successfully halted manufacturing operations for the day.

Along with Kassel, protesters marched to the Rheinmetall building while navigating a number of additional police blockades. On social media, activists shared images revealing that the business had covered its signage with black tape, possibly in an effort to avoid having its emblem appear in pictures.

Germany is close behind China as the world's fifth-largest exporter of weapons. The German weaponry market was valued €9.35 billion ($9.34 billion) in 2021, a major increase from €8 billion in pre-pandemic sales.

One of the organizers, Conni Lenert, referred to Rheinmetall and businesses of a similar nature as "profiteers of human pain" in an interview with the TAZ newspaper.

When asked particularly about the conflict in Ukraine, another organizer, Nina Kemper, responded, "There is no such thing as a war for peace," and Lenert concurred, saying, As a result of the fact that so many people profit from the selling of weapons, "Peace cannot exist in our capitalist society."
