ISRAELI PRESIDENT HERZOG TALKS ABOUT THE NECESSITY TO CONFRONT THE PAST AND CREATE THE FUTURE

 

Isaac Herzog, the president of Israel, spoke before the lower house of the German parliament. He discussed the significance of never forgetting the past and building a better future in relation to the Holocaust.

As part of a trip that commemorates the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre of 11 Israeli athletes, Israeli President Isaac Herzog spoke before the Bundestag on Tuesday.

The visiting president discussed the necessity to remember the Holocaust and Germany's Jewish past, as well as how crucial it is to shape the future.

Herzog told MPs that being in Germany meant remembering since it was a land of images for the Jewish people, including "images of the highest achievements and the lowest."

"For hundreds of years, Germany served as our people's home country. Major Jewish figures for whom Germany served as home before the Holocaust were among the leading individuals for whom Germany served as residence, he claimed. They improved Germany by making a contribution.

Herzog did point out, though, that given its role in the Holocaust, Germany also had a special place in Jewish history.

Germany was the nation where the darkest atrocities against the Jewish people, and against mankind as a whole, were committed.

He continued, "Only the dead can forgive, and the living have no right to forget," adding that the future also needed to be taken into consideration.

The future belongs to us, Herzog stated; the past cannot be changed. "We are also heavily responsible for it."

On his speech, the Israeli president emphasized the need "not to turn a blind eye to the voices of hatred, be they in the streets, on social media, or in political centres of power."

Herzog also emphasized Iran's danger and the necessity to prevent it from obtaining nuclear weapons.

If Iran has nuclear weapons, it might use them to kill another nation, and this is unacceptable, Herzog continued.
