JAPAN RELAXES COVID-19 BORDER RULES, BUT AN INCREASE IN TOURISTS IS UNSURE

According to business officials, unless tourists are given more freedom to travel within Japan, the country's looser border controls, which went into effect on Wednesday and increased the daily maximum on arrivals from 20,000 to 50,000, won't result in a flood of visitors to boost the economy.

The government's decision to decrease the entry threshold remains restrictive, they claim, hindered by its persistent caution regarding the coronavirus pandemic, and tourists will continue to forego Japan in favor of more hospitable nations despite the low value of the yen.

In response to people starting to move in other regions of the world, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida stated at a press conference last week that he wants Japan to "follow the trend."

To that purpose, the requirement of a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours after departure has been replaced with the ostensibly less onerous requirement of triple vaccination proof. Additionally, guides won't be required to travel with tourists.

A manager at the well-known Japanese travel company H.I.S. Co. expressed satisfaction over the loosened travel restrictions for foreigners and added the wish that if airline routes to Southeast Asia were to resume, more tickets would be sold, increasing revenue.

The daily average of more than 140,000 for arrivals in 2019 will be significantly below that amount.

If limitations on visas, the daily entry cap, and individual travel are not totally relaxed, it is difficult to foresee a boom in tourists, a tourism sector representative claimed.

Contrary to its neighbor South Korea, which recently extended its visa waiver for Japanese citizens through the end of October, Japan still suspends its visa exemptions.

A single-entry visa to Japan costs roughly 3,000 yen and must be applied for. In theory, visas are issued within five days of application.
