LARGEST JOINT MILITARY EXERCISES BETWEEN THE US AND SOUTH KOREA SINCE 2018
Seoul claims that on Monday, South Korea and the US began their biggest joint military exercises since last year. As its nuclear threats have increased, this will undoubtedly infuriate North Korea.
In order to defend South Korea from its nuclear-armed neighbour, Washington, Seoul's main security ally, has around 28,500 troops there.
The two nations have long engaged in joint drills, which they maintain are only defensive but which North Korea interprets as a practice for an invasion.
The Ulchi Freedom Shield drill signifies the start of extensive training exercises that had been toned back as a result of Covid-19 and a failed diplomatic effort with Pyongyang.
According to defence ministry it states that the importance of joint exercise is improving the south Korea-US alliance and normalizing the defensive posture.
The exercises which will run from August 22 to September 1, are expected to feature tens and thousands of soldiers as well as field drills including aircraft, cruisers, and tanks. However, specifics of the exercises have not been made public.
The partners, citing the increased frequency of North Korean missile testing, decided to "extend the scope and size of combined military exercises and training" during a summit last week.
According to a joint statement, this will begin "with Ulchi Freedom Shield to strengthen combined readiness."
Analysts predict that North Korea may exploit the exercises as justification for additional weapons testing.
Authorities in Seoul were "wiped out" earlier this month, Pyongyang said, as they were held accountable for a recent Covid-19 outbreak in the reclusive nation.
Less than a month earlier, Kim Jong Un had threatened that his nation would be "ready to mobilize" its nuclear arsenal in the event of a conflict with the US or South Korea.
An intercontinental ballistic missile was fired at maximum range for the first time since 2017 as part of North Korea's barrage of sanctions-breaking tests this year.
Officials in Washington and Seoul have also issued warnings that the isolated government is getting ready to conduct what would be its seventh nuclear test.
