LEADING PRO-TALIBAN CLERIC IS KILLED IN A DEADLY BOMB AT AN AFGHAN MOSQUE.

According to Taliban authorities and a local doctor, an explosion that occurred on Friday in western Afghanistan tore through a crowded mosque, causing the deaths of 18 people, including a well-known imam. Over 21 people suffered injuries.

During Friday noon prayers, the pinnacle of the Muslim religious week, when places of worship are at their busiest and most packed, the explosion occurred in the Guzargah Mosque in the western city of Herat.

Mujib-ul Rahman Ansari, a well-known imam who was well-known throughout Afghanistan for his criticism of the nation's Western-backed rulers over the previous 20 years, was killed in the explosion. Ansari was perceived as having ties to the Taliban, who took over the nation a year ago as international forces departed.
Zabihullah Mujahid, the top Taliban spokesman, confirmed his demise.
According to Mohammad Daud Mohammadi, a representative of the Herat ambulance centre, ambulances brought 18 bodies and 21 injured individuals from the bomb to hospitals in Herat.
For the explosion on Friday, there was no instant admission of guilt.
The violent Islamic State group, which has attacked a number of Taliban targets as well as religious and ethnic minorities in Afghanistan, has previously claimed responsibility for mosque attacks.
The Sunni branch of Islam, which dominates Afghanistan and is also practiced by the Taliban, draws adherents to the Herat mosque.
