MORE AGGRESSIVE UK POLICY AGAINST CHINA UNDER NEW BRITISH PM TRUSS

 

On Tuesday, Liz Truss, a self-described defender of the post-World War II western order, succeeded Boris Johnson as prime minister. Johnson's attitude toward Beijing has been criticized by many in his party for not hardening quickly enough.

The previous ten years have seen a deterioration in relations between London and Beijing as Britain has grown concerned that allowing Chinese investment could endanger its national security and that China's military and economic assertiveness may work against its post-Brexit free trade objective.

Truss sees it as her responsibility to create a barrier against China because she sees it as a challenge to the rules-based system that has regulated post-World War Two trade and diplomacy.

She stated in a well-known address earlier this year that "countries must play by the rules and that includes China," adding that Beijing was "rapidly constructing a force capable of projecting strength deep into regions of European strategic interest."

Truss cautioned that China's development as a superpower would be cut short if it broke international norms, and that it should take note of the West's forceful economic response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

She argued that China's growth was not inevitable and that the West should help Taiwan, which Beijing claims is its own territory, be able to defend itself.

The office of Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen conveyed Truss its congratulations and noted that the new prime minister "came forward and called on the global democratic camp to continue to ensuring Taiwan has the capabilities to defend itself" during China's recent military exercises close to the island.
