THREE FORMER PRIME MINISTERS FROM AUSTRALIA AND ALBANESE WILL ATTEND ABE'S FUNERAL

In a unique show of respect for Japan's longest-serving prime minister, Australia will send its current government leader as well as three past leaders to Shinzo Abe's state burial this month.

Former leaders John Howard, Tony Abbott, and Malcolm Turnbull will be a part of Australia's formal delegation, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Thursday.

Albanese claimed that during Abe's two tenure as prime minister, from 2006 to 2007 and from 2012 to 2020, they all collaborated with one another.

The mission will not include Scott Morrison, the Australian prime minister who served in that capacity from 2018 until the country's May elections.

Between September 26 and 28, Albanese will be in Japan. His center-left Labor Party won the May election.

Mr. Abe was a "great leader, a catalyst for change in Japan and the region, and a real friend of Australia," according to a statement from Albanese.

"Under Mr Abe's leadership, Australia and Japan enhanced our economic linkages, defense collaboration, and people-to-people links because he was passionately devoted to improving relations between our two countries," Albanese said.Abe, 67, was killed in July on a street in western Japan by a shooter who approached him from behind and started firing as he was giving a speech for his campaign.

His anticipated state funeral, which has polarized public opinion in Japan, is set for September 27. The prime minister who signed the treaty ending the American occupation of Japan was the only other former government official to get a state funeral in postwar Japan.
