WEBSITES FOR THE TOKYO AND OSAKA METRO WERE PURPORTEDLY ATTACKED BY A PRO-RUSSIAN HACKER GANG.

In what looks to be a second day of cyberattacks against Japan, the websites of the Tokyo Metro Co. and the Osaka Metro Co. became unreachable on Wednesday evening. A hacker collective supporting Russia claimed credit on social media.

The assaults, which might have been carried out by Killnet, occur one day after the group took credit for attacks on websites belonging to the Japanese government.

On Wednesday at around 6:30 p.m., Killnet posted a video and declared war on what it described as Japan's anti-Russian campaign on the messaging app Telegram. Soon after, at around 7 o'clock, the group posted once more, claiming it would shut down Tokyo's subway system.

Another DDoS assault, in which hackers overwhelm a network by delivering floods of data from numerous sources over a brief period, looks to be to blame for the most recent interruption.

The e-Gov web portal appears to have been impacted by a similar strike that damaged Tuesday's government websites, which made it difficult to access their services.

According to Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno, access to 23 websites across four government ministries was interrupted on Wednesday. Additionally, he mentioned that the websites were back in operation and that no data leaks were known to have occurred at the time.

Killnet claimed credit for the attacks on Tuesday in a post on its Telegram account that also seemed to say that it was revolting against Japan's "militarism" and kicking the samurai.

The organization claimed that it had staged the attacks, and Matsuno acknowledged that they had indicated culpability, but he only went as far as to declare that "the reason of the interruption including its connection (to Killnet) are in the process of being confirmed."

Several cyberattacks on websites belonging to nations supporting Ukraine after Russia's invasion are thought to have been carried out by Killnet.
