Alarming levels of PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl compounds, have been found in the air, ground, and water at two chemical facilities south of Lyon, the third-largest city in France, according to a press investigation.

The discoveries have sparked calls for authorities to look into the contamination and take action against this entire class of synthetic compounds, which have been used for decades across a variety of industries to create coatings and goods that are resistant to heat, water, or stains.

PFAS compounds are known as "forever chemicals" because they do not naturally decompose but rather build up over time in both individuals and the environment.

They contain carbon-fluorine bonds, some of organic chemistry's strongest chemical bonds. This indicates that they withstand deterioration both during use and in the environment.
