TEN ARE DETAINED IN SINGAPORE FOR SELLING ILLEGAL BUNKER FUEL

Ten persons have been detained by Singaporean police on suspicion of selling bunker fuel illegally.

The arrests were made on August 4 during a joint operation with the Singapore Maritime and Port Authority by Police Coast Guard officers. Six of the crew members worked on a tugboat flying the flag of Singapore, and the other six worked on a tug with a foreign flag.

According to preliminary investigations, the Singapore tug crew members sold Marine Gas Oil to the foreign-registered tug without the knowledge of their employer. As proof, the tugs and about $6,000 (SGD 8,000) in cash were taken.

Singapore convicted nine individuals to up to three years in prison last year for defrauding customers out of $337,000 in fuel. The group's use of powerful magnets to tamper with the Mass Flow Meter (MFM) metering device to increase the amount of fuel supplied throughout 66 different bunkering operations was discovered.

A recent inquiry revealed that a unit of commodities trading company Glencore knowingly delivered tainted fuel to ships at the port, leading to the suspension of the unit's Singapore bunker supplier licence for two months.

In 2014, the world's largest bunker fuel provider at the time, Danish company OW Bunker, abruptly went out of business when it discovered significant internal fraud by officials at its Singapore-based subsidiary Dynamic Oil Trading (DOT).
