ACCORDING TO THE WHITE HOUSE, RUSSIA HOLDS AND MISTREATS UKRAINIANS IN FILTRATION CAMPS

 

According to a senior White House official, American intelligence indicates that Russia is holding thousands of Ukrainians at detention facilities in eastern Ukraine and Western Russia, interrogating them, and sometimes abusing them.

Karine Jean-Pierre, a press secretary for the White House, said during her regular news briefings that the US believes the Kremlin considers filtration operations as essential to its ambitions to annex portions of Ukraine.

At the UN later in the day, US Ambassador to the UN Thomas-Greenfield urged Russia to stop its filtration operations right away and grant UN independent observers, humanitarian, and human rights organizations access to these filtration sites and to individuals who have been transferred to Russia.

The United States has information that members of the Russian Presidential administration are in charge of and coordinating filtration efforts, the US ambassador said as he presented recently downgraded information to the UN Security Council.

She claimed that names of Ukrainians to be targeted for filtering are provided by the Russian Presidential administration, and authorities there receive updates on the breadth and status of operations.

At a separate news conference, Vedant Patel, the deputy spokesperson for the State Department, explained to reporters that the term "filtration" is a dehumanizing term used to describe a massive campaign the Kremlin has launched to imprison, forcibly remove, or disappear Ukrainian citizens who Moscow believes may pose a threat to their ability to control Ukraine.
