CALIFORNIANS LOOK FOR SHADE AS THE HEAT WAVE ENTERS ITS NINTH DAY

 


As California burned for an eighth straight day on Wednesday, a guy in a heat-stricken Los Angeles suburb and a mother in Pomona with two small children were among the residents anxiously looking for cool places to stay.

In the state's capital, Sacramento, and other inland regions, temperatures were predicted to reach 108 degrees Fahrenheit (42 degrees Celsius), while in the Los Angeles region, they broke 100 degrees.

As the heat wave engulfed the drought-stricken region and firefighters battled numerous wildfires due to the dry conditions, the organization that manages the majority of California's electrical grid asked people to save energy in the late afternoon and evening to avoid rolling blackouts.

In cooling facilities run out of community centres and conference rooms at city hall, many people without houses or air conditioning got some relief.

However, countless numbers of homeless persons were laying on the sidewalks of downtown Los Angeles looking for any available shady areas, according to Andy Bales, president and CEO of the Union Rescue Mission, which provides relief to those who are homeless.

Bales stated that he and his team were distributing water bottles while walking the streets twice daily. Some people, he claimed, made no movement at all, just opening their eyes to scan the volunteers and grab a cold bottle.

The three local Union Rescue Mission buildings were providing shelter to about 1,000 individuals, he said.

A man who contacted from the Simi Valley suburb, where the temperature reached 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Wednesday, and two women with children were among those for whom the charity also provided cool places to stay.
