S. KOREA OFFERS TO SPEAK WITH N. KOREA ABOUT REUNITING ESTRANGED FAMILIES.

 

In an effort to break the years-long impasse in inter-Korean relations, South Korea's minister for national reunification on Thursday suggested to North Korea holding early inter-Korean talks about family reunions.

In order to have an open discussion about humanitarian issues, such as the reunion of families split up by the 1950–1953 Korean War, Yoon Suk-administration yeol's hopes to hold a face–to–face inter–Korean meeting between the authorities "as soon as possible," according to Unification Minister Kwon Young-se.

At a live, televised special news conference, Kwon stated, "The government openly suggests to the North Korean authorities that the South and North Korean authorities should meet to resolve the issue of separated families. The government will approach inter-Korean negotiations with an open mind.

The Yoon administration will "actively examine" North Korea's decision for the date, venue, agenda, and format of an inter-Korean meeting, Kwon said.

We sternly request that the North Korean government act on our suggestion right away.

Ri Son-gwon, the director of the United Front Department, received a letter from the South Korean government in the name of the reunification minister via a communication channel at the inter-Korean liaison office.

The unexpected request came as North Korea's rhetoric against South Korea became more aggressive.

Kim Yo-jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, publicly criticized President Yoon's "audacious endeavor" to achieve North Korea's disarmament last month by stating that he should pay more attention to internal concerns than inter-Korean ones.
